PORTRAITS OF REVIVAL...
Bio: J. Edwin Orr
"Whenever God is ready to do something new with His people, He always sets them to praying" - J Edwin Orr
James Edwin Orr (1912 - 1987) was born in Belfast Northern Ireland and was a Baptist minister, hymn-writer, professor, author and promoter of Church revival and renewal.
J Edwin Orr is internationally recognised as a proficient revival historian and scholar, having received his doctorate at Oxford University in 1948, with a thesis on the second evangelical awakening in Britain.
In 1966, J Edwin Orr became a professor at Fuller Seminary's School of World Mission, a position he held until 1981. Besides his teaching and writing, he greatly stimulated the study and understanding of revivals and evangelism through his founding in 1974 and continuing leadership of the Oxford Reading and Research Conference on Evangelical Awakenings. This conference of scholars met every summer to hear and present papers on revivals. His own writing continued unabated.
Mr Orr has written extensively on the subject of revival with such cogency, authority and reliability, that even F.F. Bruce, the great Scottish Bible scholar was pressed to give this following commendation:
"Some men read history, some write it, and others make it. So far as the history of religious revivals is concerned, J. Edwin Orr belongs to all three categories." - F.F. Bruce
